Pansori is a Korean genre of musical storytelling
that has been officially designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Each
individual pansori story is called a madang. The five surviving madang, which continue to be preserved
in Korea as important intangible cultural properties, are Chunhyangga, Simcheongga,
Sugungga, Heungbuga and Red Cliffga.
In reflection of the prevailing spirit of the times, pansori gave musical expression to the joys and sorrows of life,
and was only made complete by audience participation.

About Red Cliffga (Song of the Red Cliffs)
Red Cliffga (Song of the Red Cliffs) is one of
the five surviving madang of the
Korean pansori storytelling
tradition. It borrows from the account of the Battle of Red Cliffs that appears
in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The
story follows characters Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei, who, after taking an
oath of fraternity in a peach garden, bring in Zhuge Liang as advisor and
defeat Cao Cao in the Battle of Red Cliffs, though Guan Yu, remembering their
former ties, lets Cao Cao go free without killing him. Red Cliffga does not follow the version of the story in Romance of the Three Kingdoms exactly but
rather introduces new characters or makes changes to the original characters. The
scene of the soldiers lamenting their hardships is played to comic effect. Of all
the existing pansori works, Red Cliffga boasts some of the fastest
meters as well as impressively grand and powerful sounds.
